Fleas can be found on dogs, cats, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and just about any warm-blooded animal, and even humans! They are parasites and survive of-of the blood of their host.
Fleas need humid and warm climates in order to reproduce in large quantities. Fleas can detect the presence of their host from a far distance. When homeowners and their pets are away for long periods of time, fleas become hungrier and as a result, reproduce even faster when homeowner and pets return. Even though there are many different types of fleas, the most popular one that attacks even dogs, is the cat flea.
Fleas are small parasites, about 1/8" long, wingless, latterly flattened, and have piercing-sucking mouthparts. The flea has very well developed legs allowing it to jump at least six inches straight up. Their color is black to reddish brown. The body is covered with backward projected spines which help it move between the hairs of the host.
Effective flea control, which requires customer cooperation, involves three steps: sanitation, insecticide application, and animal/pet flea control.

This process also allows carpet fibers to loosen any debris, which allows the pesticide to penetrate to the base of the carpet where flea larvae are found. Pets should be treated by a veterinarian, pet groomer, or the owner on the same day the house is to be treated. Outdoors, items such as toys, pet food bowls, clothing, etc. need to be removed before broad insecticide application in the yard and there adjacent areas.
